CARIBBEAN TRAVEL & LIFE MAGAZINE
Title: Art Director
I started at CTL with the task of a total redesign, beginning with the basics: new photographers to get higher quality photography. I wanted to create a more upscale look while making information more accessible for our readers. I focused on designing splashier covers, a cleaner inside look, and better quality control during production. When I got to travel, major plus. My favorite addition? The "Noodle," the string of type filled with fun facts that ran on the top of the cover and inside pages.

Each issue started with our new map that provided fun facts and upcoming highlighted events in the area. In the template, I created what I called the "channel," a narrow column that ran throughout the entire magazine that would highlight information that was pulled out of the body text. Maps, timelines and sidebars were added to break up information into edible bites for our readers.
An Art Director's nightmare: When we arrived for this photoshoot in Puerto Rico, well beyond the threat of hurricane season, the skies were gray and gloomy and it was raining. For a luxurious destination photoshoot it was an Art Director's nightmare. We waited for the rain to subside and then hustled. My photographer, Erik Rank, created this warm, sunny look using warm gels. The result was gorgeous.
I added maps to every story to help our audience gain a sense of the area they were reading about. Breakouts of like timelines provide readers with sense of each country's unique past.
Each destination now had an "Inside" section that highlighted travel information about the area. Previously, this had been part of the main text and was difficult for readers to find.
